Harper designates 9/11 as day of service

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has designated Sept.11 as a national day to honour the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks.
The PM says the day will also pay tribute to the Canadians and communities who took in stranded travellers when air transport shut down in the wake of the attacks. He adds he hopes people will use Sept.11 as a day for community service and charitable activities.
Harper is to travel to New York this weekend to take part in commemoration ceremonies. He’s set to join a public memorial service on Sunday in Lower Manhattan, the site of the former World Trade Center buildings whose destruction 10 years ago also tore through western society.
He also plans to meet privately with the families of Canadians killed in the attacks in Washington and New York.
