McGuinty announces $5-million for Goderich tornado recovery

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has announced $5-million in funding to help a Lake Huron community recover from the deadly F3 tornado that struck Sunday.

At the announcement, made Monday afternoon, McGuinty sent his support to the people of Goderich.

“To the people of Goderich, you’re not alone. We are with you. I want you to take part. I want you to know that we are in your corner,.” said McGuinty, “”I want to offer my sympathies and prayers on behalf of all Ontarians to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life. My wish to those who have sustained injuries is that they recover at the earliest possible opportunity.”

McGuinty also said that he wished well to those affected by the tornado and that “The path to recovery is a long one but we’re going to get there together.”

After taking a tour of the heavily damaged town, the Premier said he has a vision to fully restore Goderich to its original beauty.

An emergency cabinet meeting was held Monday morning and McGuinty said $5-million was allocated by way of a disaster relief fund, to be used to help the municipality with clean up and recovery cost as well as help out individuals in cases where their insurance may not fully cover the damages to their homes or businesses.

McGuinty also took to Twitter to express his condolences to the people of Goderich.

He tweeted, “My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Goderich. We will support the recovery & rebuilding of one of Ontario’s prettiest towns.”

A Facebook page called “Goderich Ontario Tornado victims and support” has been set up. People are posting offers of help, supplies and prayers. They’re also posting pictures of the damage.
