Are tablets best for students?

Tough decisions lay ahead for parents embarking on the journey that is back to school shopping.

One of the head scratches can come from the world of technology. Should you get your kid a laptop or are you better off with going with the newer tablet devices?

Tablet computers are definitely the in thing in the technology world.

But according to National Post technology editor Matt Hartley, getting one for your child as their primary school device is a bad idea.

“You’re not going to want to write a ten-page history paper on an iPad, it’s a painful experience. So you’re going to need to get a keyboard anyway. If you’re going to buy a student a tablet and a keyboard, then why not just buy them a laptop?,” Hartley asked.

He said tablets are wonderful learning companions, but should never be your go-to in-class device.

“There are a lot of benefits to having an iPad or another tablet because you can get certain books on them,” he explained. “And there are certain applications that may prove really beneficial to particular students.”

Whether you have a laptop, tablet or some other technology device, Hartley said always, always be sure to back up all your data, or you may regret it.
