First day of CNE youth hiring fair leaves some hopeful and some empty handed

TORONTO, Ont. – There was disappointment for some on the first day at a youth CNE hiring fair.

Hundreds waited for hours in the hot sun for jobs as cashiers, games attendants and food servers.

Balal and his friends arrived at 9:30 a.m. with high hopes – only to be told more than four hours later that the employers had reached capacity and the line was cut off.

He told 680News he probably will not be back.

“I already have a job but I was thinking maybe this is a good opportunity to make some extra cash but I feel like it’s not worth it.” Said Balal.

However, for Mikayla it was a different experience.

She told 680News she had her very first job interview for, what could be, her very first job.

However, that it was not for lack of trying.  She said she’s been looking for a job for a while.

“Ever since summer started and now I get a chance to apply for a job and I’m keeping my hopes up that I get this one.” Mikayla said.

Mark could be serving up pizza or beavertails to visitors when the CNE opens.  He was another lucky youth to get an interview and he told 680News he thought it went well.

“I just handled it. I just stayed focus throughout the interview.” Said Mark.

However Kasha was not as lucky. She waited in line with hundreds of others only to be told to go home.

“They just cut us off right before us. Five people were before us and they just cut everyone off.” Said Kasha.

The job fair runs until August 18.
