Intense storm in southwest Ontario topples electrical towers

TORONTO – A severe storm in southwest Ontario toppled electrical transmission towers and prompted Environment Canada to issue a tornado warning Saturday night.

Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Lambton, Elgin and Middlesex counties but were called off after a couple of hours.

Environment Canada says it has not received any reports of actual tornadoes but the pair of storms that sparked the warnings uprooted trees and damaged powerlines.

Hydro One says eight of its big steel transmission towers were knocked down.

Hydro One spokeswoman Nancy Shaddick says more than 13-thousand customers were left without power Saturday night.

Some customers for Sarnia’s Bluewater Power and London Hydro were also affected.
