Mayor Ford could announce buyout for senior city managers; core services review released

TORONTO, Ont. – Mayor Rob Ford has got the scissors out again.

His latest attempt to get Toronto in the black could include a buyout for senior city managers.

The 2012 budget has a $775-million hole so the pressure is on to save money.

Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday would not give any specifics but told 680News buyouts have not been ruled out.

“We’re looking in ever corner to try to find savings.”

Consultants have completed the core services review which studied services, department by department.

The public works committee will be the first city committee to deal with the results of the study which has identified millions of dollars in potential savings.

They will meet next Monday.

The review has found the public works department can save money by contracting out more garbage collection, reducing street-sweeping operations, ending driveway snow-clearing and contracting out grass cutting.

Consultants have been studying city services since February.

There have bee rumours that Ford will announce an early retirement offer for senior managers and other staff.

It could look a lot like the package being offered by the Toronto Police Board, which is banking on 18 high ranking officers and civilians to accept early retirement which would save almost $3-million.
