City should reduce street cleaning, snow clearing services, report says

TORONTO, Ont. – The axe could be dropping on snow removal and more bike lanes as City Hall looks at ways to save cash.

The report’s recommendations made to the Public Works Committee also include cutting back on street cleaning, environment days and contracting out more garbage collection.

“Why don’t we stop cleaning the drinking water and see how much that saves us,” Councillor Adam Vaughan asked.

“This is a mayor who has spent millions, millions and millions his first six months to purposely do absolutely nothing,” Vaughan said.

The report also found that people are willing to pay.

“According to the survey … the people, the city have spoken,” Vaughan explained. “They want better services and they’re willing to pay for them.”

Throughout the week, councillors will be sifting through every committee, looking over the cost-cutting recommendations.

The budget chief said there’s a menu to chose from.
