Royals set for dragon boating, Sea King outing in P.E.I.

Prince William and Kate start the week in the Maritimes with a day in the birthplace of confederation, Prince Edward Island.

History, culture and big machines will play prominently in today’s seven-hour schedule.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Charlottetown on Sunday and were greeted by a breathless 10-year-old Sophia, who presented Kate with a bouquet of flowers.

The excited youngster says she can’t wait to tell her friends all about it when she returns to school in the fall.

“It was amazing and she’s so pretty and it was just so amazing!” she exclaimed. “I felt so special, because not everyone gets to do that.”

Islanders gathered outside Peake’s Quay where the couple dined, chanting “Will and Kate!”

“I need a better picture, these are all blurry!” complained one young girl, craning for a better view, adding she’d picked flowers from her own garden in hopes of giving them to Kate. “I was in Italy when the wedding was on, so we had to stay up until, like, midnight to watch it.”

The girl and her friends abruptly squealed and rushed off to snap more pictures of the royal couple as they emerged from the restaurant.

Throughout the city, streets have been closed and video screens set up in a downtown park so crowds can follow the royal couple. Prince William will deliver remarks to the crowds and the couple will meet and greet the crowds with a procession through the streets to Confederation Park where tens of thousands of royal watchers are expected.

The Duke and Duchess will then head north to the other side of the island for a dragon boat race against Premier Robert Ghiz and Prince William will be in the cockpit of a Sea King for a demonstration of emergency water landing techniques.

Will and Kate will depart for Yellowknife at the end of the day.
