Carbon tax hike, inflation mean double whammy on wallet

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Check your gas gauge; you might want to fill up now. The latest carbon tax increase takes effect on Friday.

It’s a great start to your long weekend: another 1.1 cents per litre, bringing the total amount of carbon tax to more than 5.5 cents per litre.

News1130 has heard some “choice comments” from drivers this morning, who say they’re sick of carbon tax increases. But this man says there’s not much we can do about it:

“Nobody wants to see taxes going up, but it’s inevitable. I mean, if we’re going to drive, we’re going to have taxes going up.”

“I don’t drive, personally,” says another. “I know that if prices of fuel keep going up, then they’re going to have to raise the price of transit tickets. So, that’ll affect me, too.”

It’s not just the carbon tax – inflation is also up, hitting 3.7 per cent last month — which is an eight-year high. That’s mostly because of fuel prices, but the prices at the grocery store have also gone up and shoppers are feeling it.

“The price of food has gone up a lot recently,” one man gripes. “I noticed in one year, the price of things like milk has gone up over a dollar. That’s pretty crazy.”
