NDP hopes ‘practical’ platform will reach broader audience this election

TORONTO – They’ve been wandering the political wilderness since Bob Rae left them there in 1995 — but things may be looking up for Ontario’s New Democrats.

They’re seeing some gains in the polls under new leader Andrea Horwath.

And now they have a new platform they hope will appeal to broader spectrum of voters.

They’re looking to ride the same wave that carried their federal cousins into Official Opposition status in the May 2nd election.

Horwath is promising an NDP government would take the HST off gasoline, cut emergency wait times in half, boost the minimum wage to 11 dollars an hour and balance the province’s books by 2017.

But despite the NDP’s rising hopes, the latest polls suggest Tim Hudak’s Progressive Conservatives — like their federal cousins — are likely headed for majority government status in the October election.
