HD video cameras being put in Ottawa police cellblock will roll this summer

OTTAWA – Ottawa’s police chief says high definition video cameras are currently being installed in the Ottawa police cellblock and will be rolling this summer.

In the final report on the review of cellblock operations, Chief Vern White says the new surveillance system will provide improved image quality.

The review of cellblock operations was launched after two incidents came to light last November, including the 2008 arrest of Stacy Bonds.

Audio recording of the cellblock began in February.

Bonds filed a $1.2-million lawsuit last December, alleging her charter rights were infringed, leading to her being negligently and maliciously prosecuted.

Cellblock video of Bonds’ arrest shows her struggling with officers and then being held on the floor with a shield as her shirt and bra are cut off.

A Special Investigations Unit probe of the incident led to a sexual assault charge against an officer.
