Alleged kidnapper Romeo Cormier will testify at New Brunswick abduction trial

MONCTON, N.B. – The defence lawyer for a man accused of abducting a New Brunswick woman last year and keeping her captive in his basement apartment for almost a month says his client will testify.

Robert Rideout says Romeo Cormier will take the stand in his defence against charges that he kidnapped a 55-year-old woman in Moncton at knifepoint and held her against her will for 26 days.

The 63-year-old Cormier has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, theft and uttering death threats.

The woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, took the stand last week and testified that Cormier threatened her and sexually assaulted her during her time in captivity.

She said Cormier only left her alone on three occasions and she escaped on March 24, 2010, after he went to a food bank.

Rideout says Cormier will give the jury another explanation of what allegedly took place.
