Filibuster over back-to-work legislation could go into next week

OTTAWA – Like the Energizer bunny, the debate on the Canada Post back-to-work legislation just keeps going and going.

MP’s have been arguing about the bill since Thursday morning and it is now officially the longest debate for back-to-work legislation in parliament’s history.

The NDP is filibustering the bill, saying it is unfair to workers.

Conservative MP Ted Menzies told 680News the arguments are redundant.

“When mail isn’t being delivered, when bills and statements aren’t being delivered, when cheques aren’t being delivered – very frustrating. This is all for show.”

NDP MP Thomas Mulcair told 680News that his party has to take a stand to prevent this kind of “bad legislation” in the future.

“The signal that is being sent to all government employers is don’t even bother negotiating in good faith, the goons across the aisle in the Conservative party will take care of it for you.”

Politicians from other parties say they are getting frustrated with the filibuster and that it’s losing its meaning. One MP even said “You’ve proven your point now move along.”

Staffers have continued to pour into the House of Commons with trays of coffee for the MP’s during the many hours of debate.  The NDP’s Pat Martin told 680News he was eating chocolate covered espresso beans to keep his energy up and avoid the bathroom breaks coffee would cause.

During the night, some MP’s broke out into campfire songs to keep their spirits up while others reportedly snuck off to their office to catch a quick cat nap.

There have been rumours the debate may last until at least Tuesday.
