Murder charge laid in Parkdale death

TORONTO, Ont. – A murder charge has been laid in the death of George Wass, one of several vulnerable Parkdale residents brutally attacked in the downtown neighbourhood.

The string of attacks saw people living with mental illness being punched and kicked for no reason.

Wass, 62, who was known as the gentle giant to those around him, was beaten in March and died three days later.

Staff Inspector Peter Lennox told 680News detectives were amazed by the help they got from outraged residents.

“We were touched at 11-division by the reaction of the community, which was deeply upset and mourned Mr. Wass’ loss deeply, but that community really came together,” Lennox said.

Ricardo Morrison, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder in the case.

He has been held in custody since his arrest early on in the investigation, when he was charged with five counts of assault causing bodily harm in the attacks, which date back to January.
