Rae won’t run to be permanent leader of Liberal party

OTTAWA – When the Liberals choose their replacement for Michael Ignatieff, Bob Rae’s name will not be on the ballot.

The Toronto MP has announced that he will not seek the full time leadership of the party.

However, Rae may not stay out of the spotlight.

In a letter to his Liberal colleagues, he said he is putting his name forward for the interim leadership, although there is one condition.

Rae said he wants assurances that the party will hold off on electing a new leader for at least another year and a half.

A measure like this cannot be confirmed until a special convention is held by the party over the summer.

Rae is a popular choice for party leader and the Globe and Mail reports that he has been given the nick name of “Bob the Rebuilder” by other MP’s.

The deadline for the party to choose an interim leader is May 30

The only other Liberal candidate to throw his hat into the race is former astronaut Marc Garneau.
