Layton says he would back coalition if Conservatives win a minority

OTTAWA – With less than two weeks left in the federal election campaign, party leaders faced questions, Tuesday, about what the possibility of another Conservative minority could mean in the House of Commons.

Stephen Harper was asked, Tuesday, if he would stay on as Conservative party leader if he failed to get a majority government.

Harper said he would not speculate about his future options, but stated that his party was focusing on a successful campaign.

“We’re in the election to win and all I can say is serving my party and serving Canadians in my capacity as leader and Prime Minister is a great honour,” said Harper.

NDP Leader Jack Layton is clear on his views on what the future of government may hold if the Conservatives get a minority.  Layton said he wants to form a coalition government and he does not see anything wrong with parties trying to work together.

However, he was quick to add that the Bloc Quebecois would not be involved in the coalition.

When asked about the possibility of a coalition forming, Liberal MP Bob Rae said that the party who finishes first gets the first chance to gain the confidence of the House.
