Eastbound 401 reopens after truck crash in Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 from Mavis to Hurontario have reopened after an early morning tractor-trailer crash.

The section of highway was closed for over 12 hours.

The westbound lanes were also closed after the fiery crash at about 4:30 a.m.

The Ontario Provincial Police said the driver escaped safely when the truck hauling food products crashed into the guardrail and burst into flames.

The food in the truck also caught on fire and spilled out of the tractor-trailer, and then eventually onto the highway.

A tow truck driver was one of the first people to arrive on the scene. He told 680News that flames were shooting up into the sky.

“It was almost to the top of the street lights. It was a big fire,” said the tow-truck driver.

The OPP said the roadway under the truck fire has been damaged and will need to be repaired.
