More rain means possible basement flooding for sections of the GTA

TORONTO, Ont. – Thundering storms have come roaring into the GTA over the past few years and, in areas like the beach, it means clogged and flooded basements.

Councillor Mary Margaret McMahon, who represents the ward, told 680News residents in the area have no protection against the water because basements are uninsurable.

“That’s been common in these areas because I guess the insurance companies are fed up,” said McMahon, “It’s very frustrating and that’s why I want to work with Toronto Water and the residents ASAP to find a solution.,”

The insurance industry doles out approximately $1.3-billion a year for water damage and some companies say they have seen a 200-per cent rise in claims over the last decade.

A representative for the Insurance Bureau of Canada says if residents do not want to see a rise in their premiums, they should clear out their basement.

“Move irreplaceable, personal belongings, expensive things that are hard to replace, up to higher ground.”

The bureau suggests people check with their insurance company yearly for an update on their policy and storm coverage.
