Jays home opener sells out Rogers Centre

TORONTO, Ont. – Selling out the home opener has become somewhat of a tradition for the Toronto Blue Jays, and the 2011 season is no exception.

The Jays have sold out the more than 50,000 seats at the Rogers Centre this spring, meaning it will be a packed house when the Minnesota Twins come to town on April 1.

Tickets for the first game of the season are notoriously difficult to get, with many of the seats selling out within hours of being opened to the public.

Optimism is always high at the start of a fresh baseball season, but fans will really be in for a treat when pitcher Ricky Romero takes the mound and tosses the first pitch of the 2011 season for the new-look Jays.

Romero, 26, is part of a young and promising pitching staff this year, a staff that is expected to give the Jays a realistic shot at competing for a post-season berth. Romero won a solid 14 games last year, in only his second professional season.

Pitcher Brett Cecil, 24, won 15 games last season and hopes to continue to build upon his success.

Another interesting storyline is Jose Bautista, 30, MLB’s reigning home run king, and whether he can come close to matching the 54 home runs he stroked last season.

While tickets for the home opener may be tough to come by, traditionally the second and third games of the season don’t come close to filling-up. However on Sunday, April 3, a good crowd is expected for the Jose Bautista bobble-head doll day.

Toronto hosts the Oakland A’s starting April 5, before embarking on a 10-game road trip that will keep them busy until April 19, when they return home to host the rival New York Yankees.
