Hyundai targets popular small car segment

TORONTO, Ont. – Korean automaker Hyundai is focusing its efforts on the biggest vehicle segment in this country: small cars.

The redesigned Elantra compact sedan is flat-out beautiful, and marketing boss John Vernile said Hyundai’s going to win you over with quality and value.

“Let me give you an example, on our most popular trim, the GL, we added about $2,100 of equipment and lowered the price by $100,” he said.

There are two new entries for 2011, including the redesigned Accent subcompact, which goes on sale in April.

“It’s going to get best in class fuel economy, have best in class standard safety equipment and is going to have the interior space of a compact car,” Vernile said.

But the showstopper is the all new Veloster, which is a compact car with Coupe-like styling, but has a third door on the passenger side for rear seat access.

The Canadian International AutoShow, held at the Metro Convention Centre, runs until Sunday, Feb. 27.
