40-vehicle pile-up on Highway 11 kills one

A woman is dead after a 40-vehicle pile-up on Highway 11 between Orillia and Barrie.

Police told 680News the woman, in her early 20’s, got out of her car after being bumped in the pile-up and was struck and killed by another vehicle.

OPP Const. Peter Leon told 680News drivers should always remain inside their vehicle after a collision.

“The message that the OPP are trying to get through to people is that we don’t want anyone exiting their vehicle when they get involved in a collision.”

The chain reaction crash involved about 40 vehicles, including one tractor trailer that jackknifed and another that rolled into a ditch.

Police say they estimate a dozen cars were damaged beyond repair.

Heavy snow squalls were blowing through the area when the pile up occurred, a school bus was used to shelter drivers stranded on the highway.
