Explosion at Mexican resort a homicide investigation: Officials

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – A probe into the resort explosion which killed five Canadians this past Sunday is now a homicide investigation.

Mexican officials have confirmed that they wish to determine whether negligence led to the blast at the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel in Playa Del Carmen.

An official said the probe will determine if the accumulation of gas came from faulty construction or lax maintenance.

A spokesman for the Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office told the Canadian Press that homicide charges are possible against anyone who may be deemed responsible.

Meanwhile, engineers, architects and scientists have teamed up to determine what exactly happened.

The explosion also resulted in the deaths of two Mexicans. An additional six Canadians were wounded, some of them suffering serious injuries.
