TORONTO, On. – Amazon has secured a patent for a system of gift conversion that could see unwanted gifts switched before they even reach recipient’s homes.
If the system is implemented, it will let users log in and setup their own gift converting rules for presents, sent to them via Amazon.com from clueless relatives.
For example, profiles could be set to exchange VHS tapes to DVDs, clothing to be converted to a specific size, and limits could be set on items people send – so six pairs of the same novelty socks aren’t given as presents.
It would also allow users to block items, convert all gifts from a particular person or specify all gifts to be converted to gift certificates.
Unfortunately, this is just a patent and there’s no indication from Amazon when or if this system will roll out onto their website.
