Statistics Canada chops surveys for savings

OTTAWA, Ont. – Statistics Canada has announced they will chop at least five surveys after being ordered to find $7 million in savings.

The government agency, which is already reeling from the long-form census controversy, said they will drop a pair of environmental surveys, a health report and two sets of business statistics.

The agency suffered a blow earlier this year, when cabinet decided to drop the mandatory long-form census scheduled for 2011, replacing it with a voluntary survey.

In addition, StatsCan lost its chief statistician in July.

Earlier, federal officials said the agency would receive an extra $30 million to run the voluntary survey, but their spokesman said the additional funding has not yet been approved.
