One dead, three missing, nine rescued in Ukraine ship sinking

KIEV, Ukraine – A cargo ship with 13 crew members on board sank off Ukraine’s Crimean coast early Monday, leaving one sailor dead and three missing, officials said.

Nine other crew members were recused after making it onto life rafts, the Emergency Situations Ministry said. Rescuers deployed boats and a helicopter to search for the missing sailors.

The ship was transporting metal from the southern Ukrainian port of Odesa to Georgia when it sent out a distress signal in the early hours of Monday. The ministry did not specify what caused the ship to sink.

The crew is made up of Russian and Ukrainian citizens. The ministry had earlier said there were 12 sailors on the boat.
