Jobless rate falls to eight per cent in September

TORONTO, Ont. – Canada’s economy lost 6,600 jobs last month, even though the unemployment rate actually edged down one-tenth of a point to eight per cent.

The loss of jobs, while though tiny, is indicative of a sluggish economy that has now shed workers in two of the past three months.

Statistics Canada said the unemployment rate fell because fewer workers, particularly young people, were actively looking for employment.

The biggest losses came in Ontario, where there were almost 23,000 fewer people working in September than the previous month.

There was some good news in the report.

Statistics Canada said the key softness came in the part-time category, where 43,700 jobs were shed. Full-time employment saw a healthy pick-up of 37,100.
