MARKDALE, Ont. — Chapmans Ice Cream plans to open its new plant on the one-year anniversary of a fire that destroyed the old facility in Markdale, Ont.
Owner Penny Chapman said they are aiming for a September 4 grand opening.
The new plant will be 15,000 square metres, about double the size of the original plant, and has a price tag of $50-million to $75-million.
In the meantime, Chapmans said the company has managed to hang on to market share as a miniplant churns out products while the new facility takes shape.
Once the new plant opens, Chapman said it will retain the current 450 workers, keep the miniplant going as a nut-free facility, and hire 50 to 100 more employees.
