Hundreds gather at Queen’s Park for royal visit

TORONTO, Ont. – It was pomp and ceremony at Queen’s Park, Tuesday, as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip wrapped up their nine-day visit to Canada.

Hundreds of people waited for the royal couple on the front lawn of Queen’s Park — the final walkabout of her Canadian tour.

Some had flowers in their hands that they hoped to present to the Queen.

Her Majesty attended the presentation of the Ontario Medals for Good Citizenship and then unveiled a special plaque, along with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, commemorating the 105th anniversary of Queen’s Park.

McGuinty escorted the royal couple along the walkabout.

On Monday night, Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosted the Queen and Prince Philip at a state dinner at the Royal York Hotel, which was on a back up generator during the power failure.

Harper told the crowd that Canada’s affection for the 84-year-old monarch is both deep and real.

The Queen praised Canada’s values of freedom and fairness, and expressed her fondness for this country.

Her Majesty also unveiled a display for the Hockey Hall of Fame that features an image of her dropping the puck at a Vancouver Canuck game in 2002.

The royal couple leaves later on Tuesday for New York City.
