Marchers urged the G8 leaders to declare water a human right, stating access to safe water is a fundamental human need and a basic human necessity.

Kate Heming, who represents the group of townspeople, said it’s an especially important message coming from Muskoka.

“Here in Muskoka we’re the stewards of great amount of water wealth,” she said. “We really have to learn how to take care and become better stewards of the water that we live with here. This is an example of this community stepping up and doing so.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will open the meetings with an 11:45 a.m. speech to the G8 in Huntsville.

Some of the top items on today’s agenda include African outreach, the BP oil spill, and the ongoing war in Afghanistan with both Canada and the U.S. losing their top commanders.

Negotiators for the G8 leaders are said to have made large strides in the pre-summit legwork on the issues of peace, security and maternal health in developing nations.
