Harper to meet with Mexico’s president

OTTAWA – Mexico’s president will be meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday during a visit aimed at soothing the country’s hurt feelings with Canada.

Felipe Calderon is due to address Parliament before heading to a working lunch with Harper.

Last year, Canada slapped a visa requirement on Mexican tourists to curb a flood of bogus refugee claimants. The new rules caught visiting Mexicans off guard, and they believed it was heavy handed.

As a result, the crackdown confirmed the suspicion that Mexico does not matter to Canada.

While in Canada, Calderon will push for deeper trade and investment.

On Friday, he will meet with business executives in Toronto, and hold talks in Montreal with Quebec Premier Jean Charest and the directors of Bombardier.

Bombardier has operated an aerospace manufacturing plant in Mexico for the past two years.
