Gay men should be able to donate blood: HIV & AIDS researchers

MONTREAL – Leading HIV and AIDS researchers believe it is time to drop the lifetime ban on blood donation from gay men.

Doctor Mark Wainberg of McGill University said gay men in stable relationships should be allowed to give blood, and the rules of the present should no longer apply.

“The current policy is one that discriminates against all gay men in a permanent way and that seems a bit … not only unfair, but it seems to be counter to the best interest of the blood agencies that chronically encounter shortages,” Wainberg told the Canadian Press.

Along with his colleagues, Wainberg will make the argument in this week’s issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
