Canadian soldier memorial in Kandahar set to expand

Kandahar, AFGHANISTAN – The memorial for Canadian soldiers at Kandahar airfield is set to undergo a major expansion in the coming weeks.

Task force engineers have designed plans for two new wings to be added to the existing structure, in order to accommodate American soldiers killed while serving under Canadian command.

The white marble and black granite cenotaph has grown steadily for the past few years, after beginning in 2006 as a simple boulder where plaques of fallen soldiers were hung.

Over the past year, 26 American soldiers serving under a Canadian commander have died in action, and U.S. casualties started to outpace Canadian losses in 2009.

The job is expected to be completed with the help of local contractors, by the end of June.
