Update: Mother of Robert Dziekanski thanks RCMP for apology and settlement

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Robert Dziekanski’s mother has thanked the RCMP for their apology and settlement involving her son’s death, including including a $20,000 contribution to scholarship fund. It brings an end to the civil suit launched by Zofia Cisowski against the RCMP last fall.

Details of the confidential settlement were not released. Cisowski and RCMP Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass appeared together at this morning’s news conference near the South Terminal of YVR. Cisowski says the settlement will help her heal.  Her lawyer, Walter Kosteckyj, says publicly disclosing the settlement wouldn’t help in the process of reconciliation with the RCMP.

Dziekanski died at YVR on October 14, 2007, after he was zapped five times with an RCMP Taser following a scuffle with four officer.  His death was caught on videotape and touched off a storm of outrage after the video showed a scene markedly different from the RCMP’s description of what happened.

During a senate hearing last May, a high ranking RCMP officer said the force was “very sorry” for the death of the Polish immigrant but stopped well short of admitting a mistake was made.
