Ottawa gets tough on auto emissions, announces joint Canada-U.S. rules

OTTAWA – The federal government is cracking down on auto emissions in a bid to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.

Environment Minister Jim Prentice said he will bring in tougher auto emissions standards starting in 2011, in concert with the United States.

He said the new rules mean Canada and the U.S. will have uniform emissions standards for cars and light trucks in future.

The new standards will raise the price of vehicles, but Prentice says drivers will make up the added cost in about a year and a half, through better gas mileage.

He said that by 2016, the new measures will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles by 25 per cent from 2008 models.
