680News supersizes its Weather Guarantee jackpot thanks to listener idea

TORONTO, Ont. – The 680News Weather Guarantee jackpot is much larger Wednesday, thanks to a great suggestion from a longtime 680News listener.

Listener Allan Shaw was hoping 680News would do the same for Canada’s Paralympic athletes as it did for the country’s Olympic athletes, by adding $100 to the Weather Guarantee jackpot for every medal won.

When that didn’t happen the Monday after the closing ceremonies, he sent an e-mail to 680News vice-president and general manager John Hinnen.

“I am glad that I had such a positive response from Mr. Hinnen, about adding the $1,900. I sort of figured, oh well, maybe the e-mail would [be] ignored,” Shaw said.

“But he got back to me very promptly and said yea, this is a great idea. So, I’m actually pleased that 680News is going to honour this and show the same recognition for our Paralympics as they did for the regular Olympians.”

Nineteen Paralympic medals for Canada means an extra $1,900 into the Weather Guarantee jackpot.

And because 680News meteorologist Brian Hill made the guarantee on Tuesday, the jackpot now stands at a record $34,200.

More than 13-million people tuned in to watch some part of the Paralympic Games. CTV and Rogers said the most-watched event was the closing ceremonies.
