New research shows pop may increase chance of pancreatic cancer

Sugary drinks may lead to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, according to a U.S. study.

The research suggests those who drink an average of five soft drinks per week have an 87 per cent increased risk, compared to those who drink fewer than two.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota have said the high sugar content of drinks like pop increase the amount of insulin the pancreas produces, which may contribute to cancer cell growth.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly forms of the disease.

Only five per cent of those who are diagnosed with it remain alive five years later.
