Layton misses first public event a day after announcing he has prostate cancer

Jack Layton has missed his first scheduled public event due to health issues one day after announcing he has prostate cancer.

He was supposed to attend a celebration for a local publication in Brampton, Ont., at a Sikh place of worship.

Layton’s spokesman Karl Belanger says the NDP leader “was not in a condition to travel,” though he couldn’t confirm if it was related to his cancer.

Layton announced Friday that he was diagnosed in December with prostate cancer.

He vowed to beat the disease his father also overcame.

Belanger says Layton still plans to attend a fundraiser event this afternoon in celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year.
