Vietnamese orphan goes to Boston to thank doctors for facial surgeries

A young Vietnamese orphan is in Boston Friday to thank doctors there for treating a large growth on his face.

Twelve-year-old Son Pham travelled from Halifax, where he’s lived for the last two years, to express his gratitude to specialists at Children’s Hospital Boston.

Doctors there conducted 25 operations and injection treatments over the last two years to reduce a large vascular anomaly on the left side of his face.

Son said it took longer than he expected and he’s happy to finally be finished, but that he is pleased with the way things turned out.

Olwyn Walter, the little boy’s Halifax caregiver, says he will be returning to Vietnam next month to live with his foster family after having his last procedure Jan. 12.

Son came to Canada in 2007 to seek treatment at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, but officials said they wouldn’t proceed because his condition was not life-threatening.
