Brad Duguid to become Energy and Infrastrucutre as McGuinty shuffles Ontario cabinet

Former aboriginal affairs minister Brad Duguid will become Ontario’s new minister of energy and infrastructure when Premier Dalton McGuinty’s new cabinet is sworn in later Monday.

Sources confirmed Duguid will take over the combined ministries from Liberal veteran Gerry Phillips, who accepted the post on an interim basis last fall when former minister George Smitherman quit cabinet.

McGuinty has to fill two holes following George Smitherman’s resignation to run for mayor of Toronto and former housing minister Jim Watson’s decision to quit so he can run for mayor of Ottawa.

Dwight Duncan is expected to stay in finance, while Phillips, Ted McMeekin and Donna Cansfield are all expected to be dropped.

The sources said some big changes are in the works, but names are being withheld because the premier is still making phone calls to Liberal members to let them know who will be in the new cabinet.

One report had former finance minister Greg Sorbara returning to cabinet, but Sorbara dismissed the idea last week, and said he would concentrate on co-chairing the Liberal’s re-election campaign.
