Electricity prices may go up

The days of cheap electricity in the province are gone.

Experts are warning consumers that prices may go much higher to encourage conservation, pay for new generation and cover the cost of pollution.

A report released earlier in the week says if the price was higher consumers would use less, saving on electricity.

The report says time-of-use pricing is a start but suggests it be used with something called critical peak price, where a certain number of days per year when power use increases the price goes up five times the regular peak price.

Most Ontarians will be moved to TOU pricing this year as hydro companies turn on the recently installed hydro metres.
