Local media team up for “Spirit of the Season” food drive

The spirit of giving thrived, Friday, with the “BT CityNews Spirit of the Season with 680News,” a food and money drive for the Daily Bread Food Bank.

The drive, which started at 6 a.m. and ended at 7 p.m., took place at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto.

680News music reporter Rudy Blair was at the food drive and reported from the scene.

Many people dropped by to donate food and money during the drive.

In one instance, members of the Carpenters’ Union local 27 donated $5,000 to the Daily Bread.

Doug, a union member told 680News, they wanted to give back to the community.

“I think it is important, not only to us, but to our membership at large … we live in a trade union, we benefit from it, why not give back to this community. These are people who need the help,” Doug said.

The aim for Friday’s drive at the Sheraton Centre was to receive $100,000 and 100,000 pounds of food.

In the end more than 48,000 pounds of food was collected and more than $77,500 was raised.

The Daily Bread is still looking for non-perishable items, such as peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, soups, stews and rice.

At the end of January 4, when the Daily Bread’s winter food drive ends, the goal is to have raised $1-million and have collected one-million pounds of food.
